Imagine using
a modern structural system of timber beams and trusses to
rebuild an early
19th century covered bridge that had been destroyed by vandals.
Pocopson Industries, a global
leader in designing, manufacturing and building quality
structural timber systems, did just that. The firm's team
of designers and engineers recreated Delaware's historic
Smith Bridge by using the latest in timber building technologies
and wood strong enough to resist decay and fire. The demolished,
145-foot, one-lane bridge seemed to have come back to life
again.
The authenticity of the bridge's
appearance captured the hearts of Delawareans and historians
alike. Several hundred people, including Delaware Governor
Ruth Ann Minner and local civic leaders, celebrated its
completion in January with speeches, food and a procession
of antique cars and horse-drawn carriages.
